Suddenly everyone in the comments is a nuclear physicist

Nuclear Energy is one of the most effective and least deadliest energy sources we have. Modern reactors have multiple safety measures that did not exist back then. Furthermore, we are now able to extract 100x more energy and use passive safety mechanisms.

The reactor on Tschernobyl not only had no access to these new methods they also:
Had the control units calibrated wrong AND were instructed by the government on that day to turn down security measures to test the performance outside the norm.

All radioactive waste we ever produced fits into two swimming pools.

Everyone having taken a photo of it are more than likely tremendously un-alived.

Correction: it’s is a symbol of the gross incompetence, broken communication, and conflicting interests of a political system maintained through fear and mass delusion.

Nuclear power is COMPLETELY safe if used right with the correct triaining

The reason Chernobyl and Fukushima went was because the owners wanted to cheap out on all the safety instruments and building materials. They 1000% could of been avoided. There’s reactors to this day that still face the same issues in the US too. Spread the word.

Corium as it's known has only ever been produced 3 times.

“What’s as big as a house, burns 20 liters of fuel every hour, puts out a shit-load of smoke and noise, and cuts an apple into three pieces? A Soviet machine made to cut apples into four pieces!”

"Unchecked use of this technology". Exactly. You check it and monitor it and it's safe. But when you don't its devastating. I live in the PNw surrounded by massive, horizon describing volcanoes every which way. They are little different, especially when you look at what Mount St. Helens did.

Corium has only been created 4 other times, in human history

This is so interesting you could watch everything on it and still have so much more to learn

Chernobyl used the RMBK reactors with control rods tipped with carbon. The accident was the result of several factors including the design, which was chosen because it's cheaper, and the soviet style of management which was to not question superiors and a belief that it was the perfect system. Arrogance, ignorance, and lies coupled with the poor design of the reactor and the building itself, and the inexperience of the night crew to perform the test, Dyatlov's arrogance to continue the test despite the poisoning of the reactor, which had stalled, caused the disaster. It was only made worse by the usual propagandization of the information coming out of the soviet union, the failure and unwillingness to understand the damage and ramifications and the poor response and evacuation. All that combined for what we know now. Only Russia still uses RMBK reactors. LWR and PWR used in the west don't have the same design flaws and operate far safer.

In 2007 the reading was 1 - 2 R/hr is equivalent to 1 Sievert an Hour (radiation sickness) the dangerous part about the elephants foot today is not the radiation it emits but the fact of all the radiated dust.

This disaster could’ve been avoided. The owners cheaper out on safety systems for profit. It demonstrates the danger of man’s Hubris, not the danger of nuclear power.
