Grand Strategy is similar to 4x games, but may be missing an X or two. Take a global war game for example, like Axis and Allies. It is grand strategy in which you manage resources, invest in research, expand your territory, but you don’t need to explore the world to find your enemies.

4x: EXplore, EXploit, EXpand, EXterminate - Civ series - i like to think of it as close to RTS, aka, play pvp with other people and win by some definitive condition. I generally feel like it's meaningless to play 4x & RTS against AI. That's their whole thing, playing against other humans. Unless, a game is designed & limited to be vs AI
Grand Strategy: generally much more sandbox, roleplaying, designing your own playstyle, challenge, winning goal - Paradox's games. Though there's often also multiplayer
