“Most people declined to work 4 days.” Of course, I’m almost certain that either managment threatened them with cutting bonuses and promotions or people were afraid of those consequences even if the management didn’t vocalize them.

Im betting black companies will say they implement the 4 day work to get that government incentive but leave out the mandatory overtime on the 5th day, wouldnt go past them to even classify it as volunteer work so its unpaid

It's definitely a culture thing.
If you take the 3 days break, people will see you as lazy, so your chance of getting promotion will be lower.
Unless the rule is mandatory, most people wouldn't take it.

I live in Japan and I haven't seen a single company have it as 4 days. I want it to change. BTW school is charging from 5 days a week to 6 days a week so I'm sad. I have at least 7 more years of school sooo....

This is good, stress from overworking is a really big problem in Japan from what I’ve heard! I hope they succeed in changing to a four day work week.

Reducing working days does not mean they’ll actually reduce the working hours. They’ll probably get even more working hours to compensate and feel like they deserve the long weekend

The last time they tried to do something like this and told people that overtime isn’t allowed anymore, the companies made the workers come in earlier in the morning or stopped paying for their overtime, I can’t imagine this will go well

The change has to come from the higher position in the hierarchy.

I was studying Japanese Management when I was studying in Japan. I agree that I think it is more of a culture thing or their mindset. Maybe if they work in an international company it can happens. But for a Japan company, the mindset it still there even if the company tried to change the way they works. Basically, in Japanese company how you can "rise up in rank" (sorry I forgot the word, like from a team member to manager to director). It is not based on your achievement or innovation or things like that. It is based on how much you are loyal to the company and it have like levels. And the way to show how much you are loyal to the company is by the working hours. So even if the working hour is done they are going to do overworking because of that. That is also one of the reason they don't take a lot of leave or vacation and second reason is that their work load will be given to someone else when they take a leave and that will disturb the harmony and you will feel bad, because someone workload will be heavier because of you. So, it is no wonder about the karoshi. Also the level to rise up, if you are seen that you don't "work much" for the rest of your life you will be stuck like maybe you can't be a director and only stuck as a manager. Though, some company already trying to change but yeah the mindset is there. Also, pressure from the old or senior workers(?) Is also there. Like it is not easy to change because "that is not how it work". But yeah they are trying, hopefully the new generation realize it too and want to change it.

4 day work/business weeks have shown to be far superior as it lets you have downtime to recover which we have proof that it boosts productivity as people are do their best work when happy, rested and well compensated
