Japan's famously hard-working salarymen — and, increasingly, salarywomen — are to be encouraged to reduce the amount of time they spend in the office environment as part of the government's initiative to improve the nation's work-life balance.

The recently unveiled annual economic policy guidelines include new recommendations that companies permit their staff to opt to work four days a week instead of the typical five.

The coronavirus pandemic has already brought huge changes to the way that Japanese corporations — many of which are still highly rigid and traditional — go about their business.

Political leaders now hope to convince management that flexible working hours, remote working, growing interconnectedness and a host of other developments can be beneficial if they remain in place even after the end of the health crisis.

Japan has extreme social issues because of their extreme corporate culture. This is no abrainer. Suicide, Depression, and loneliness in Japan is high for many reason and should be addressed.

*If anyone deserves this, it's Japan, but I could image them cramming 5 days worth of work into 4.*

Japan's the last country I would imagine trying this

I’ve been working 4 days a week for a while. The company just doesn’t know

I live in Japan. This is cool and all, but I have a bad feeling this is going to fail miserably. Japanese people are way too stuck in their ways. They're going to run this experiment, businesses and employees aren't going to comply, and they're going to say, "see, it doesn't work." They do this with so many things. They run a trial designed to fail and then say it can't work.

Also, if they do manage to pull it off, they need to reduce the school week to 4 days as well. Why the hell would you be a salaried teacher when you could work somewhere else only 4 days a week? Teachers here already work too much as it is, this is going to create a serious labor inequality issue.

I hope it works, but I have as much faith in Japan as I do America.

In a few years we will see studies with "surprising" results that conclude that people who work less are happier and healthier.

I’ve worked 4 10s for the last 5 years. It’s fucking incredible. I couldn’t imagine going back to a two day weekend.

THAT'S WONDERFUL! Yea, if there's any country that REALLY needs it, it's Japan! Much love to them!

Can't imagine Japanese companies actually implementing this. Or anyone opting in because of the social pressure around them.

The 4 day work week doesn’t need to be “tried”.
It needs to be implemented into law, period.

Japan needs to enforce 4 days. Because work culture and peer pressure is present where workers are discouraged for using paid vacation days or sick days now.

I pray this doesn't get ignored by people trying to "show the boss how hard they work"

This is true, they've shown that when people work 32 hours or less, they are more attentive, they pump out better quality work, and the overall tenor of the staff improves overwhelmingly.

The best example is how much work you get done when you’re taking off early on a Friday to leave for a weekend getaway. In those situations, I’m always amazingly efficient and motivated.

I’ve often said: very little work gets done before 10am Monday morning, or after 3pm. Fridays: almost nothing gets done after lunch (at least not for office jobs). So why not boost morale and eliminate those working hours? If you got a project that needs to get finished, well, let the office trust that you’re an adult and will finish up any pressing matters.

DC politicians, instead of wearing clean suit & ties, should instead clothe themselves like NASCAR drivers with dizzying # of corporate logos emblazoned on their outfits.

This makes too much sense. Allow people to run errands during the day off during the week and then have weekends for leisure. If we stagger the day off during the week people can go to the bank, doctors appointments,
Mechanic grocery store etc. people wouldn’t need to work so late in the day either

I cannot believe this is happening in the country where people literally work themselves to death.

Being able to make a comfortable living on a 20 hour work week should be the norm at this point.
