Best Hot Hatch 2022

Aussies might be deserting traditional passenger cars in favour of SUVs and utes even more quickly than they’re adopting EVs, but the humble hot hatch continues to buck that trend.

Yes, there’s plenty of life left in the traditional hot hatch, which remains the epitome of the enthusiast’s do-it-all car by combining pace, agility, fun, practicality and affordability in equal measure.

Arguably, in fact, there’s never been more choice when it comes to accessible hot hatches, as evidenced by the Ford Fiesta ST and Focus ST, the Hyundai i20 N and i30 N, and the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Golf GTI.

So we assembled the six best light and small hot hatches available in Australia today, and compared them for safety, technology, comfort and convenience, ownership costs and, of course, driving performance – both on the road and racetrack – to name just one winner.

Love how they say most importantly driving but then allocate 20pts per category

Very informative and I agree with the winner ! IMO the Focus ( in a less ‘ look at me’ colour) is perhaps a bit of a sleeper. Well done Scott - looking forward to the performance track review.

Your chart at 1:49 shows how much you know about the cars you review. Both Golf and Polo have a 2 year/30tkm service intervall (oil change might be due sooner) and VW doesn't offer a "5 year/unlimited km warranty". I don't know about the other brands, but I suspect that those infos are wrong aswell.
If I don't know stuff about something, I don't review it.

Curious how you came up with some of the scores, looking at the two fords they have the least amount of safety kit, the Fiesta the least by a long way, but the ratings don't seem to reflect this, the Focus especially getting the second highest yet having the second lowest amount of 'stuff' in the tables?

Love the fiesta ST will probably upgrade the brakes tho.

Nice review. These cars vary substantially in cost though - which is a huge factor. I purchased a 2022 Polo GTI for 48k, fully optioned - I could have gone for a Golf GTI, but with the options I wanted, it comes to 68k. I didn't think a Golf was worth paying an extra $20, 000. I am very happy with the Polo though.

fiesta st is a great little car specially the mk8, incredibly good in handling. had a pre-facelift before i can say its the most fun car i've ever had(compare to big power german performance cars) the mk8 only sold in few countries i think which make it a bit underrated.

VW place last/ close to bottom because realistically they arent dedicated hot hatches. Theyre by far the best daily drivers and my money would be on the golf beating every other car on the list in a straight line.

I personally would have put the i20N first place, since that by a long long way is the best hot hatch to come out of the last few years.

Is there much point in reviewing the Ford Focus when the company has just announced they are permanently withdrawing the car from the Aus market, and that a small shipment is all that will come in the next 6 months?

I wonder what it must be to be called a cold hatch?
