My Art School Portfolio that got me ACCEPTED!

Over the years many of you have left comments asking to see my portfolio I used to apply (and get accepted) to art school! although it can feel soooo cringe to look back at old art, I think it's important for younger up and coming artists to see that you don't need to be perfect. Art school is a time to work on your concepts and illustrations and to address those weaknesses you might have.

Ross's entry portfolio for art school looks better than my graduation portfolio for art school :')

If that's a portfolio to get in at 17 years old, where are you supposed to learn before that ? I get the feeling mine would have been a few doodles torn from my math books.

I know I'm not supposed to compare my progress to yours but ngl this makes me inspired and really depressed

@ anyone who is thinking about art school; Imo, its not about learning art, at least not soley. You can do that online, you can hire teachers etc, the diploma doesnt mean too much in our industry. Art school is really good for making friends + making industry connections (if your school is good) It's also good for developing an experience with serious deadlines and working as if you were in a real job.

Man, being a self taught artist is hard! Ross' art looked so much better than mine does now and I'm 21. I'm gonna keep up the grind and aim to achieve higher

Happy birthday all the way from Nigeria, sadly my dreams of being an artist was shut down in high school cuz at the time it was seen an insane idea until when I was 23. I decided to draw and hopefully I’m improving

I graduated from high school at 16, but my art was under-developed, I went to community college and got my AA. I took a gap year and refined my portfolio and worked. I got into my top choice university (which isn’t an art school) and got admitted to their BFA program. Don’t feel defeated if you’re not “there” yet. Perfectionism/comparison can be the very thing that kills your spark. Even if you don’t think you’re improving, taking 5 minutes out of your day for a simple sketch can be worth it in the long run.

Oh and draw things that make you happy! I’m rooting for whoever’s reading this ^-^

this is a great reference for high-end art schools. 17 y/o ross was evidently a very intermediate artist esp for his age. however, for other less-experienced young artists looking into apply for art school, do not make art school your be-all n end-all. also, as ross stated, you do not necessarily even need to study art. art school is mainly for the sake of building connections n getting feedback from professionals. if you're confident there's a place for you in creative n entertainment industries, art school is a good way to at least better the chances of you getting there. there are also of course alternatives for art school. less demanding art schools like ringling n scad are out there. you also don't even need to apply for just an art school. there are more affordable universities out there with fleshed out art programs. also be aware of other majors. applying to one major may be more difficult than another due to competitiveness. but in the end, don't be afraid to apply to high-end schools, but also be sure to keep your options open.

personally, i have zero traditional art background n i didn't really start taking any art seriously until half way through junior year. i have a graphic design background but my portfolio consisted of a bunch of multi-media works focused on 3d, which i only really spent a year mildly refining since that was the medium of my ap art portfolio. i got into ringling, scad, n uarts but ended up going to drexel due to its finaid offerings (while the art schools gave none), experienced teachers, n coop program, since entertainment industry jobs largely emphasize experience on top of your portfolio.

I actually needed some tips, and dos and don’ts to prepare my art portfolio. I’m not prepared to graduate yet because I need to finish my classes, and track my progress before I am ready to graduate. I’ll need some more time for myself to prepare my portfolio, and I’ve been taking some time from art. Because of my mental health. 🙃 This is a good video Ross.

I remember getting into my college for animation. I remember they left me a brief note in my acceptance letter that they enjoyed my eye for color as well as all the original characters I had (I still lean heavily into character design).
