Regarding swimming accidents: It might also be worth considering for yourself, but especially if you have kids, please let them wear bright bathing suits (NOT blue). Blue or darker colors are way harder to see from above the water in case something goes wrong. Best colors would be neon pink or neon orange.

I was in Germany at the Neuschwanstein Castle in June 2022. Two female students on a trip after graduating college followed someone they knew from their hostel (were aware of him rather than knew) and they followed him into the bushes around the Marianbruk bridge to get a better vantage point of the castle. He tried to sexually assault both of them and when they fought back he threw them both off the cliff. One was killed by the fall and another was seriously injured by hitting a tree on the way down but survived. He (American) was arrested and recently convicted for the murder and assaults. I had been on the bridge myself maybe 20 minutes before that happened and have footage of the rescue/recovery. Just because someone is familiar (same home country, language) doesn't mean they don't have bad intentions; so trust your gut.

Living in Switzerland and being a passionate hiker, I regularly see tourists walking on mountain paths with regular sneakers, not bringing along enough water and sometimes even taking their kids along

Your sincerity for people to be safe when they travel touched my heart.

Follow similar logic as when you are home. If you can’t handle a 10 mile hike at home-don’t try it abroad. If you’re not out at 2am back home-don’t do it abroad! Basic life preservation skills can prevent a lot of deaths.

Two Americans died recently in Greece from heatstroke. So being unprepared is a reason

Car accidents. Yes. I live in New Zealand and we have tourists arrive after traveling for 24 hours, jump in the car tired. Dont drive tired get a hotel room for the night first.

Sad topic, but I’m glad you decided to cover it to let us know so we can be safe while abroad.

Here in Ontario we have many lakes which means we also do a lot of boating, we have a saying that goes, water on the water beer on the pier.

The suicide one really shocked me. My husband had a heart attack in Norway many years ago. It dose happen unexpectedly.

I think an overlooked factor in travel deaths is not knowing what to do in an emergency.

Two weeks ago I had a medical emergency in Costa Rica. The front desk staff at our resort helped us with getting medical attention.

If we were somewhere else, or perhaps more remote, I might not be here to make this comment.

Here in Norway also «being unprepared for nature» is pretty high on the list 😑 No, it is not a leisurely stroll to the top viewpoints of the fjords, please do not wear flipflops when going into nature, do not forget that the weather changes super fast and it can rain and snow even in summer in some areas. Follow the good old scouts motto «Be prepared!» 💪 and do your research so you know what to bring and how to dress appropiately so you won’t slip and fall off a cliff or freeze to death on a remote mountain path 😑

And on the subject of safety, let us not forget the top 3 reasons for landing in jail overseas: 1) illegal dr*gs, 2) illegal dr*gs, and last but surely not least, 3) illegal dr*gs.

I got tapped by a car in Drogheda, Ireland. I looked one way and the car came from another. I terrified the woman driving, but to this day am thankful she was alert. No pain, but I felt it .

Two people in my motorcycle club had accidents in the first couple of days of their European motorcycle tours. I think you should wait a couple of days before riding or driving to make sure you are over the jet lag. Also, learn about your rented vehicle before riding off so you can focus on the traffic.

Oh my gosh Mark, this timing of this video is sadly very on point... Just a couple of weeks ago, a young man died from drowing in the Douro river in Porto. He did the same jump from the D. Luís bridge that kids from the area usually do.
But he couldn't make it and died righ there in front of many helpless tourists who cheered for him, convinced it was an innocent pratice since kids in Ribeira have been doing it for ages...
His natioanality wasn's disclosed, authorities just said he was a foreigner.
But just goes to show that we tend to overlook danger while in vacation and adhere to social norms without thinking about the consequences.
Stay safe folks!

In April we toured the Mighty Five National Parks and the Grand Canyon. I can't count the number of people going off trail, around guardrails and standing on the edge of rock overlooks. One wrong move and they would be gone. Honestly, its amazing more people aren't killed.

Selfies is also a growing factor. People tend to do really stupid stuff to get a good picture.

Thank you for a sober and realistic look at a fraught topic. Now, tourists where I live often think they'll get hurt or killed by terrorists. Not impossible, but here are more likely causes:

1. Car accidents
2. Heat stroke
3. Alcohol and/or drug use
4. Flash floods
