If you are a U.S. expat working for a U.S. company, you are likely trying to qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion (FEIE) under IRC Section 911.

You must file your Form 1040 and include Form 2555 to take the exclusion. You can also prepare Form 673 and provide this to your employer to exempt your wages from federal income taxes.

Thanks for explaining the form in plain language. This clears up some confusion that I was having by reading the form itself.

So helpful, thank you! Say, a U.S. citizen is living overseas and working for a company that has nothing to do with U.S., does this person need to find a U.S. tax preparer to file tax every year?

Thank you for explaining this . Very helpful! Btw, if TP is working and living in foreign country, and her/his employer withholding social security in their country (not us fica), is there any way to claim or notify the US government? Or any form needed to file with 1040?

How does this apply if they start mid year but expect to work the same job for 3-5 years? Are they exempt the last few months of that first calendar year?

Awesome...thanks for this. There is so little info on this out there, I've done a dozen hours of research on it and this was more helpful than all of it.
