I test which fluid works better in my 1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ's power steering system.
I found that power steering fluid worked better in my application.
Can you use atf in a power steering system or power steering fluid in atf?

ATF does have friction modifiers, but is also has seal and line conditioners, and a full additive package of anti-wear and anti-oxidant agents that PSF (which is literally just straight hydraulic fluid) does not have.

My Subarus and Toyotas used to have serious whine that got really bad offroad, in the heat, or when towing. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF (*not* the LV or HP) + Lubegard Power Steering Protectant (small purple bottle) is a far more robust fluid than any straight power steering fluid. If you want your whine to go away, your steering to be smoother, and your pump M1 Syn ATF + Lubegard PSP (both on Amazon) are literally the ticket. Also, this combo is fantastic in cold weather as well.

I was a Jeep technician for a few years and when we did power steering flushes at the dealership we used power steering fluid that had red dye added to it. The red dye was so it looked correct to the customer but we had a lot less issues using the power steering fluid. What I heard from a lot of the guys around the dealership was that they only used at in the power steering system from the factory because it was a fluid they already had to buy and had on hand. It would cost them more at the factory to buy, ship and store an additional fluid.

I went thru 5 ps pumps and 2 gear boxes on my old jk running atf as recommended, switched to PS fluid and lost one more pump before I tossed a cooler on it aswell. After that no issues unless the new owner had issues.

THANK YOU!!! I just put Valvoline Stop Leak PSF in my 2000 durango as I wanted to do a quick fluid change. The fluid had 220k miles on it, so it was pitch black. Afterwards I realized the old fluid was actually ATF (really couldn't tell with it being so black), and I was thinking for sure that I was going to have to do yet another fluid change to replace it back with ATF.

I noticed it took down the whine quite a lot. Mostly, I just want the pump to last a bit longer until I can replace the rack and pinion.

for my hyundai azera i learned very late that this forgotten steering fluid reservoir have built in filter! & when it's clogged it causes poor car stability, stiff steering & steering pump noises! i was pulling my hair to figure out the cause unstable steering my car! by the way all you need to drain the fluid is from the return pipe of the reservoir then jack up the car & turning the steering wheel repeatedly both ways (without starting the engine) untill it drained out

I emptied my reservoir of ATF similar to how you did, then refilled with PS fluid, started up, did lock to lock.
Now I hear you say I should have done lock to lock before start up.
I am hearing a bit more noise than before. I thought the PS fluid in place of ATF was the problem. But maybe it's because I started up before lock to lock.
How would I know if I got air into the system.
I'm pretty sure there was still fluid it the system, because the ps fluid I added is was clear, yet shows pale pink now (some ATF still in there)
What should i do now Doc ?

05 LJ had a leaky input seal on the steering box for years leaving puddles everywhere filling every 2weeks-1month, finally my free PS fluid supply ran empty threw some ATF in and whattah yah know not a drop leaked in over 3 months now.. different box and different issue but ive had no PS issues or whining and its nice not to be ruining the driveway and spending 10$ a month... apparently a seal wouldnt fix my issue the shaft would need to be replated but i feel if different fluid fixxed it a seal kit would of as well.. local guy charges 300-500$ for plating all the shafts and new seals or seal kits are around 100$, atf was free we'll see how long it lasts

I believe the fluids are the same if not really similar as far as viscosity and function, atf has detergents and additives in it for transmission clutches and gears ect obviously that may help or hinder depending on your situation, im running 35MTs in a muddy trail type of terrain

I believe the difference between power steering fluid and ATF is that ATF has friction modifiers in it for the clutch plates in your auto trannies, and more friction in the steering pump which has metal on metal moving parts = more heat generation and wear. ATF is commonly used in power steering pumps just because it is the same viscosity and is easier to find, power steering fluid is much better for the pump but in the case that you don't have the specific fluid needed, ATF is the best substitute especially if you drive an automatic then you may already have it on hand!
