Hey Josh, what about actual manufacturers like GM and Ford that say specifically on the unit itself, "use ATF only?"I have run DexII for decades without issues. If it was bad would there not be more failures? From my understanding, you should not mix between P/S fluid and ATF.

Personally, I use whatever the owner's manual says because that's the way it was designed.

I think Toyota would disagree with you.

Depends on the automaker. Using amsoil atf in my Toyota ps system for years. No issues.

Isn't the pump in a 4l60e transmission a metal on metal vane design?

I think he’s saying you should just use engine oil for the power steering pump AND transmission, but when I did that everything started smoking. I’ll try putting trans fluid in the engine next.

Ford has ATF that also says power steering fluid on the bottle

Ive used power steering fluid in a ton a vehicles that state to use ATF. Never had an issue immediately or in the long run. People like to over react over the smallest things. For example over filling your oil by 1/2 a quart... people freak the F out real quick when in reality it is not a big deal. Its always the people who trade their cars in every couple years that think they know it all because they havent had a vehicle break down. Own one till it hits 300k then you can come talk to me about what works.

Josh, owner's manual for my 1990 Toyota 3.0 V6 pickup specifies Dexron ATF, but have since heard it may not be the best for this system. Observation?

Toyota recommends Dex iii, however when you see a new Toyota at the dealership those new Toyotas do not have red Dex iii from the factory. It’s a gold oil like color.

This is funny. Toyota recommends I use dextran three automatic transmission fluid in my 97 Tacoma and my 2010 Tacoma. I’m pretty sure if Toyota tells me to use it in their truck I’m gonna trust them a little more LOL

I've tried them both and my '98 Olds Cutlass is much quieter and more responsive with dex-III transmission fluid in it. So are you saying my steering system actually had less metal on metal friction with power steering fluid in it even though it was noisy with dead spots and ran hotter?
