Better explanation of how to do it if you are struggling: Put the drumstick between the two fingers like he told you, and keeping your hand stiff you want to draw imaginary circles with your drumstick. Then slowly start to use your fingers more and get a looser grip over time and you’ve got it.

Taping the fulcrum and not looking will teach your hand to autocorrect to the center as you feel it roll off the tape on either side. Maybe wrap it 3 wraps over each other for thickness to "feel" it.
