How turbos work? Boost vs Horsepower.
Here was the question from the previous episode:
How much boost would you actually need to run to get to 400HP?

You're totally awesome if you guessed 3 Bar Gauge pressure since it's actually 4 Bar Absolute. This would get our little 2.0L to 400HP 💪
So again, dealing with absolute pressure makes sense (moreso than gauge at least). Our original engine made 100HP naturally aspirated at 1 Bar Absolute Pressure. It went to 200HP by doubling the absolute pressure from 1 to 2 Bar. Then, to double it again, we'd need to double our boost on our absolute scale to a whopping 4 Bar to get to double it again to make 400HP.
Now, if you really wanna confuse yourself (assuming you're not already confused, lol) play that game in PSI....It gets really messy! You'll totally understand why I used the Bar pressure scale instead.
When you're calculating power gains, always remember to use absolute pressure for boost- even if it's a naturally aspirated engine. By doing this, everything scales properly. Our ECUs in our car do this thousands of times per second using absolute pressures, and are able to accurately calculate the fuel requirements this way. 🧮
