people will never know unless they seek these videos just how hard Tom and Eugene worked to save that LM from disaster. Phew that was close. Brilliant post, thank eveyone involved on this channel. I will send this link to Tom's daugher Dionne.

Haven't heard the cabin audio anywhere else; a great find!

I think there 12 manned Apollo missions launched. Seems like there were close calls and white-knuckle moments on all of them. It's a wonder we didn't lose anyone up there. But on the plus side, much was learned from all those mistakes.

How was this audio never released until now? I've only read the transcript of the internal comms.

This is just one of many reasons they didnt try to land on Apollo 10. Every moment was dangerous but this was potentially life and death.Listening to Gene communicate everything they need to know made me realize why I never became an astronaut!

It's a little hard to tell, but it sounds like Stafford and Cernan had poor teamwork, not good teamwork. They are repeating things to each other, and often not listening to what the other is saying. I read one version of this that said one man set a switch, and the other, not aware and thinking it was his job to set the switch, wound up setting it the opposite way. Were they supposed to use AGS or PGNS? AUTO or ATT HOLD? I thought watching this, um, make up your mind. Having dual guidance systems (AGS and PGNS) in the first place also seemed to be a poor idea - I notice Orion only has one guidance system.

Thank you for posting this. I really appreciate you adding the graphics to show where switches were set and when they were changed.

I'm confused about one thing, though. I've read in (at least) two books that when the LM started tumbling Cernan exclaimed "Son of a bitch. What the hell happened?" Did I miss it here?

This was easily the biggest screw up of the Apollo program. Poor crew resource management and poor understanding of the systems on the part of both Stafford and Cernan very nearly torpedoed the entire effort at the finish line. Had they died, the result of their own mistakes, the lunar landing would certainly have been canceled for at least a year, and given the atmosphere for budget cutting in the Nixon administration, it is likely the entire program would have been indefinitely postponed. it was known the Soviets were nowhere near having a viable landing program so no harm to national prestige would have come from abandoning the idea of a manned landing. Stafford was again involved in a mistake of crew resource management on the Apollo-Soyuz test project, which resulted in toxic RCS propellants entering the cabin atmosphere during re-entry. Vance Brand lost consciousness and all 3 were hospitalized.
