The area that Alexander was born in is actually in modern day Greece and modern “Macedonians” are Slavs that migrated there in the 6th and 7th centuries so I totally understand why Greeks are annoyed when Macedonians pretend they’re descended from him or whatever they claim.

Back in Alexander’s time the area was ethnically Greek. Nowadays the inhabitants of north Macedonia are essentially Bulgarian. North Macedonia claiming him as their own would be like the USA claiming ownership of native Americans who lived centuries before white colonists arrived on the continent.

Back then macedonians were as greek as Athenians in Spartans so Alexander the Great was Greek now if slavs mixed with Greeks in the 6th century that's another story

Saying that Alexander the Great is macedonian and not greek is like saying aristotle was Athenian and not greek

Ancient macedonians definitely weren't slavic, even if they weren't as greek as athenians, because of mixing with northern neighbours at the time (which also weren't slavic).

The way you thought North Macedonians were the Ancient Greek Macedonians is exactly why Greece opposed the use of the name.

What if American Indians (Cherokees etc) started claiming they were the original inhabitants of India and you are occupying their land. “Just a name “ right?
And then imagine confused people around the world started referring to American Indians as the original inhabitants of India. That’s what’s happening here

The issue is that the Kingdom of Macedonia that Alexander was from, was south of the Republic of North Macedonia, and is a province of present day Northern Greece. That said, the Macedonians conquered Greece and spread out. So they definitely moved to North Macedonia. Likewise when the Romans took over, they divided everything up into provinces. They named the whole area the Province of Macedonia. Similar to the Roman province of Syria comprised of more nations than ancient Assyria and modern Syria. So I think the claims to Alexander the Great was more of an attempt at promoting Nationalism than a historical basis, but has some validity to it.
