It's really interesting. As an Italian living in Italy, I've never seen anyone cut it that way. As you said, we do cut it like pizza usually. But the way you did it is the one to make sure it doesn't get dry. And btw, as I don't really like candied fruit I'd say the chocolate one has been a classic substitution, or pandoro.

I use to live next to a grocery store that was owned by Italians and when the holidays came around, this stuff was rilling out the doors! Finally tried it and really liked it. Bow I wish I had some to try it in the ways that have been suggested by you and here in the comments!

I love panettone! It is my traditional Christmas Eve and Christmas Day breakfast. I can't remember the first time eating it. It most definitely was over my grandparents home most likely before I was 3 years old.
