The meteor theory might not have been proven until 1991, but it was definitely a theory which was taught in schools in the 80s. I was in school in the 80s and they shared the theory that it was either a meteor or a comet that hit the earth or a huge volcanic eruption that sent all the dust into the air which caused the massive environmental destruction.
