Does the world need deep-sea mining for the green tech revolution?

It is one of the least explored places on our planet.

We know more about parts of space than about the deepest depths of our ocean.

But this week the international seabed authority is meeting to decide whether this untouched ecosystem can be mined for the metals we need for the green technologies of our future.

The Natural History Museum has returned from 5,000 metres down in the Pacific, with creatures never seen before.

They gave our reporter Ruben Reuter an exclusive look at the species we could be about to lose.

We could choose to dedicate less energy and resources towards unnecessary work to reduce the amount we 'need'. Renewables won't solve the problem if we continue to exploit and overconsume natural resources and dont operate within reasonable limits.

Deep sea mining seems like more of the sort of thing that caused the problems in the first place. Going on past experience, for-profit mining companies will not do due dilligence on any risks that can be outsourced to the commons. Governments will be lobbied not to regulate the process effectively, and the biome will suffer as a result.

Very poorly balanced report. Could have at the very least included some footage of nickel laterite mining in indonesia or artisanal cobalt mining in the DRC. There's no perfect solution here, but dressing a (likely relatively) low impact form of mining up as an existential threat to the planet is incorrect and counter productive
