Did you know you could measure the speed of light using your microwave oven? Then you might like to know how the oven works.

It would be pretty awesome if you support ElectroBOOM at Patreon:

My 30 year old microwave has that spinning fan thing but I haven't seen that on any newer machines

"This is called a magnatron, it is a device built upon the dark arts of electronics" I love this guy. The further I get into electrical engineering, the more I understand just how brilliant he is.

Please be EXTRA careful if you take the magnetron apart, as you could get Berylliosis from the Beryllium stored inside that "stick" pointing out. This is not a joke, breathing in Beryllium dust is extremely toxic.

Fun fact: A Microwave oven in Dutch (my native language) is called a "Magnetron oven", named after the wave generating device.

5:10 Always make sure your capacitors, especially massive ones in microwave ovens are discharged. Also, keep the short circuit on them for a while too.

( @ 5:17 ) Now I get it, why my patients scream so much during their surgery, I always feel like I'm forgetting something. I'll keep this in my mind.

One of my favourite things to salvage from an old microwave is the turntable motor. It works great as a hand crank generator and can generate up to 230 volts depending on how fast you crank it.
