How To Fix Refrigerator Door Seal

If your fridge or freezer is in need of a new gasket, well you’re going to want to watch this super helpful and super easy to do tutorial on how to fix a refrigerator door seal. The team at Habitat for Humanity ReStore were kind enough to let Lou demonstrate how to do this project in their showroom.

Before you can replace the refrigerator or freezer door gasket, you need to determine what model number appliance you have. This can be found inside the door of the unit.

Once you have that info, you can either contact the manufacturer or do some research on-line to order the replacement gasket. Keep in mind, the gasket could be pricey depending on the make/model so do your homework on different parts suppliers to get the best bang for your buck.

With new gasket in-hand, simply pull out the old and insert the new gasket by hand directly into the channel that runs along all sides of the door. Be sure it’s a snug fit as a loose gasket can cause your appliance to run unnecessarily to offset any leakage.

And what do you know… you fixed it in 15:00.

The best way to tell if the gasket is the issue, is to close the door with some force. What should happen is a vacuum seal, making the door difficult to open immediately after closing.
If your freezer door easily opens right after closing, here is what i suggest. Using a medium scour sponge, clean along the side of the gasket that touches the fridge. Also clean the fridge along where the gasket connects. Clean inside the gasket, food debris has a tendency to slip in there. If cleaning doesnt work, inspect the gasket for rips. Another common issue is the gasket will begin to sag along the bottom. If this turns out to be the issue, and you are a normal person who doesnt have $200 for a fridge gasket, what i suggest is simply removing it and flipping it over. This way the sag down is now at the top with gravity pulling it the other way.
*IMPORTANT* When inserting the gasket back into the freezer door, ensure that your corners are lined up correctly. The offset corner will pull the gasket in one area, preventing it from sealing properly.

Excellent. My gasket was out of the ridge on the bottom making it not close properly. Also twisted the screws in more so the fridge panel was closer connected to the fridge door.
