Mellotron M400

I was in love with the quirky, yet hauntingly beautiful sound of the Mellotron since the first time I heard one (the obvious first encounter was the famous Flute intro in The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields).
Here‘s a little piece to welcome it to the studio after dreaming and searching for many years. It showcases the main sounds associated with that historic tape based sampling instrument: Flute, Violins and Cello.

Man, how could you not fall in Love with the Mellotron with amazing melodies such as this, a romantic and warm sound that could not be replaceable even by instruments that sound "Better". The Mellotron is by far one of the best instruments of all time.

That M400 looks to be in awfully good shape. Refurbished? The key throw looks to be deeper than a standard M400. Was the felt strip under the keyboard replaced with a chamois strip like the MkII and M4000? One key goes flat at the end of the tape. Sounds like the balance between the pinch roller and pad could use a minor adjustment. But in general, the sound is even with very little, if any, wow and flutter.

Wow! Dein Mellotron klingt fantastisch. Die Pinch-Roller greifen sofort und die Mechanik und die Bänder scheinen in sehr gutem Zustand zu sein. Hast du das M400 überholen lassen? Danke, dass du nur analoge Instrumente gespielt hast. Nichts gegen den Yamaha DX-7, aber ich konnte mich nie so recht in ihn verlieben.
