In fact, the Taiwan got occupied by Japanese before the Qing was gone. During the “First Sino-Japanese War”, which took place during the year of 1894 to 1895, it was a war between Qing dynasty and Japanese Empire. The Qing, of course, lost the war. And sign a peace treaty called “ Treaty of Shimonoseki(馬關條約)” with Japanese. One of the list in the treaty is to give Taiwan and the island around it to Japan. But that's not the end of story, after the people in Taiwan heard that they were goin under Japanese rule. The leader in Taiwan and its people decided to declare a country, name's "Republic of Formosa(台灣民主國）" In response of Japan occupion, and hope to attract other great power countries to come in and stop the Japan. But in the end, Japanese military forces still landed on the Taiwanese land, and the country only lasted for few months. Then and there, The Japanese occupation of Taiwan begins, until 1945. The Japanese Empire lost the WW2, and gave back Taiwan to the R.O.C (Republic of China)
