Meet Tal Mitnick, First Israeli Jailed for Refusing Military Service in 'Revenge War' on Gaza

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vows to continue the assault on Gaza, we speak with the first Israeli to refuse mandatory military service since Israel's offensive began over three months ago. Last month, 18-year-old Tal Mitnick announced he would refuse military service in what he called a "revenge war" on Gaza, and was sentenced to 30 days in a military prison. Just released from jail, Mitnick faces another draft summons and says he will refuse "over and over until someone gives up, until the army gives me an exemption." Mitnick says the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel broke the idea Israel could live with occupation. "We need to keep fighting for a just future," he says, urging the younger generation of Israelis to use their voices for peace. "We're the future, and we can change."

This young man is such an inspiration, so brave and courageous standing up for morality and freedom. Just wish other young people in Israel would do the same and take a stance for a chance of peace. It's the young that will change the world not the dinosaurs who are in charge in both Israel and the US.

He refused to be a war criminal. I think his parents raised a good man.

Conscious objectors to this kind of tragedy make my heart proud. Same as the people who refused to fight in Russia. Muhammad Ali who refused to fight in Vietnam etc.

In 1967 I chose Canada over Vietnam or jail. I’m still in Canada and grateful to be here.

I command that kid Kudo to him over and over and over again. Millions of kudos you are the champion of truth, Justice and peace. We need more people like you all across the world. My generation turned out to be a war hog and the generations in the past, but I see a beaconin the generation ahead and the younger generation that you are all, at least most of you are for peace and justice. Thank you.
