Let's not forget the original movie just because we got a prequel. 😂 Nala tells Simba the heards have moved on. So, I would say it was a mix of bad leadership and bad partnerships (because Scar let the hyenas hunt the Pridelands, Mufasa made them hunt separate turf), so the animals they normally hunted started migrating outside the Pridelands.

The whole message of both movies is all the animals are important for a healthy land for all, scar's excessive hunting killed many animals and chased off others which in turn ruined the ecosystem. The lack of greenery probably had something with a lack of insect eating animals such as aardvarks and mongoose, which caused termites to over populate and overgraze

Not only that mufasa was raised by scars mother and the women hunted and mufasa was great at hunting and scar wasn’t always the best at it because of his fathers taught laziness scar was trying to prove a point to Sarabi

In Mufasa, mufasa met scar and when they were on a journey they met sarabi and scar loved sarabi so much but sarabi didn’t want him she wanted mufsasa which made scar mad and tried to kill mufasa in both movies.
Btw scars real name is Tauka

I honestly think that Scar should have been Mufasas second in command so in case something happened to him Scar would have been in charge until Simba was of age. But of course the creators had to make Scar into a misunderstood lion.
