The families of the officers murdered in Katyn were deported to the east in the 1st mass deportation. 22, 000 Polish officers were murdered in Katyn. In total, almost a million Poles were deported to the east in 4 mass deportations - women, children and men. They were given 2 hours to gather their belongings. They were not told where they were going or how long they were going. Thousands died of hunger and frost. And thousands more on the spot. Because they arrived in the winter in places where forced labor camps were yet to be built.
