Swim University makes pool and hot tub care easy for millions of homeowners. Each year, we continue to help more people with water chemistry, cleaning, and troubleshooting. We know taking care of a swimming pool or spa can be difficult. And it’s hard to find a trusted source of information. This is the reason we created Swim University.

Sanitizer is one of the cornerstones of basic pool chemistry, and adding chlorine pucks is an easy way to introduce this essential chemical to your pool.

I’ve been told to “never, ever ever” add chlorine tablets to the skimmer basket as they very much can damage the pipes. Apparently the chlorine is much too strong administered in that way and can damage piping. Sooo…I just bought a float (was told on a few occasions that it is fine. Effective). Was potential pipe damage considered before making this video?

Can you do a video on what chemicals are necessary to have? Brands? Do I really need PH down, doesn't it go down naturally? Baking soda? Where to get them the cheapest? Thank you!!

People who love for you to add tablets to your skimmer: 1. People who replace pool equipment (like me). 2. People who replace skimmers.

Some pool professionals believe that placing tablets in the skimmer basket damages the filter. It causes accumulation of dissolved chlorine in the filter and may lead to excessive pressure build-up and eventually failure of filter tank. What do you think?

My pool guy advised me to switch to chlorine tabs starting late spring when weather heats up and use 2 tabs in floater device.

Hello! Does adding pucks in your skimmer damage the plastic in the long run by drying it and making it more brittle and also possibly damage your pump & water heater?
Thank you

I add pucks to a floater, and my above-ground pool is equipped with an over-the-wall skimmer. When the pump is running, the floater tends to hug the skimmer, allowing a higher concentration of chlorine in the water that enters the intake. When the pumps shuts off, the floater drifts away.

I feel this gives me two methods, the floater, and the skimmer.

I'm now experimenting with a second, weighted dispenser suspended from a float so that it releases chlorine closer to the pool floor instead of up top in direct sunlight.

How long should you wait to swim after adding the chlorine tablet in a 15ft x 48in pool?

I read adding to your skimmer is not good if your pump cycles on and off. The time it is off a high concentrate of chlorine pools in the skimmer. Upon turning it on and blasts through the system. Also what about liquid chlorine ? I've gone from tablets which caused stabilizer issues. To granular which caused hard water to now just liquid chlorine. Thanks

I understand the point of view that leaving pucks in a skimmer creates ‘highly concentrated chlorinated water’. But the pucks are designed to intentionally dissolve slowly. Pucks in a float I have used literally take days to dissolve to the point I wonder if they are any good initially. A single puck placed in my skimmer basket takes roughly 48 hours to dissolve with the pump on. So how can anyone say that putting a puck in a skimmer with the pump off causes a damaging high concentration of chlorine? This is something I have always got conflicting information on,

Would using a chlorine floater be the best option for an intex easy set pool? How long do you leave the floater in the water? Thanks!

What do you recommend for a 8 foot outside pool, my brother got one that doesn’t come with a pump, and I can find a pump anywhere.

I have a 19k gallon pool. This means (I'm told) the max amount of tablets I should have in the dispenser at any given time is TWO. Put in more and the CYA goes up quick. QUESTION: Do I wait until both tablets are entirely dissolved? When that happens it's typically at night when I can't get to them, obviously. By the time I checked the pool the next day....that darn cycle of algae begins because Chlorine levels nose-dived. Thanks!

We just bought a 12X30 intex metal frame pool and I threw half a chlorine puck directly in the pool, it is currently sitting at the bottom of our pool. Is this bad? And should I take it out??
