This “MacGregor Sailing Canoe” was designed in the 1980’s by Iain Oughtred. Sailing canoes were made famous by the Englishman John MacGregor. MacGregor ventured into Europe, the Baltic, and the Middle East using several different canoes and wrote several books of his journeys in the late 19th century. The sailing canoe was popularized also by Warington Baden Powell with his cruises in the Baltic on his Nautilus canoe, later publishing an account of his adventure.

These are a few shots taken on Lake Okanagan BC Canada one fine afternoon. Normally the boat is yawl rigged, but that afternoon was just fine with the shortened mainsail.

Plans are well suited to beginners, and are available through the Woodenboat Store.

I'm thinking of building a MacGregor. I love Iain's designs (I had a Tammie Norrie). Weight is very important for me for this build. I see the hull weight is listed in the catalogues as 20Kg. Is that realistic do you think?

Beautiful boat! I have one, too. How close to the wind can you sail?
