We explain 4 alternate methods and explain settings for how to hook up a TV set top box to an AV surround sound home theater receiver. These methods can work for any cable tv set top box, satellite box or telephone company box such as Dish Network, DirecTV, Uverse, Xffinity, Cox Cable, Mediacom, etc.

Thank you for your video. It was clear & concise & so easy to follow. You helped me to sort out connections for the Vodafone STB connection via AVR to the TV.

You have no idea how much you helped I can't believe how I was trying to do this now that i see the correct way (I would plug an HDMI Cord into the TV box and then to the back of the surround sound box and then wonder why the heck it wasn't didn't think that I would THEN have to connect a cord from the box to the back of the VERY DUH kinda moment from me.So thank you again so very much.

Thanks for this video! We need to send tv audio to zone 2 on our new Denon AVR S960H HEOS receiver. The techs had it working when they left, but after I played music on HEOS and switched back to play tv audio thru zone 2, it’s now now working. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you. This helped a lot and I was able to correct my set up. I’m able to see and listen through the sat/catv hdmi port. Unfortunately I don’t get sound when I launch an app like Netflix. The sound from the cable stations continue to play. What am I doing wrong?

Very good instruction. Do you offer a video on how to get sound from apps on the smart TV to the surround sound speakers? I haven't been able to figure that out. I'm only getting TV speaker sound.

HDMI is the only way if you have up to date tv equipment etc. IMHO everything else is obsolete now that we have a minimum of 1080p or 4K. It’s just that it’s a constant bout of ongoing education when it comes to hooking up many video and audio components. Even experienced folks can become baffled at the different ways to hookup many types of units. And that it’s probably important to have a receiver that can pass through HD or 4K if you’re not wanting to just use the TV picture and sound only. I do and it becomes somewhat of a complex topic at times. But the technology has catapulted to new heights in the past 30 yrs. it’s mind boggling.

Thanks, I happen to have same Yamaha receiver I forgot about hdmi output from amp, I phoned the cable company and they were useless. They kept saying you have to connect hdmi from box to your cpu. :) :) :)

These scenarios all require the receiver to be on with the sound coming through external speakers. Is there a way to hook this up if you just want to listen to the TV through it’s own speakers with the receiver off?

Hey. Not sure if you’re still checking comments for this video or not. But if so, I’ve got my Harmon Kardon avr240 hooked to the set top box via component cables and optical, but what connects to the tv? Receiver doesn’t have an HDMI out. RCA cables? Thanks

I recently came across a new, boxed VCR/DVD player and wanted to know how to connect it to my Denon receiver? I tried using the rca yellow-red-white cables, but can't get an audio/video signal.

I have an Xfinity set top box and when I watch cable TV I get sound out of my surround sound speakers without any issues using the HDMI cable connection method. I have a new Hisense U7 smart TV and when I want to watch Amazon Prime using my smart TV, the sound from my cable box never shuts off. I hear sound out of my surround sound speakers and I hear sound from my TV speakers for Amazon Prime Video movies at the same time. I've tried every setting on my Denon receiver and my TV and I can't figure out how to fix this issue.
