there has been a major controversy in the Terraform community recently. In August 2023, HashiCorp, the company that created and maintains Terraform, announced that they were changing the license of Terraform from an open source license to a proprietary license. This means that anyone who wants to use Terraform for commercial purposes has to pay HashiCorp a fee or use their cloud platform, which is also a paid service. This decision was met with a lot of backlash from the users and developers of Terraform, especially from the companies that rely on Terraform for their cloud operations and services.
As a result, a group of companies that include Gruntwork, D2iQ, HashiStack, Cloud Posse, CloudSkiff, and Scalr decided to create a fork of Terraform called OpenTofu.
Just last week, OpenTofu announced that they have joined the Linux Foundation as an official open source project under the Apache License 2.0.
Yevgeniy Brikman, co-founder of Gruntwork, says OpenTofu is meant to be humorous and catchy. He also says that they wanted to show that they are serious about building an open alternative to Terraform that can compete with HashiCorp’s offering and provide more choice and flexibility for users.
They also announced that they plan to apply for entry into the Cloud Native Computing Foundation to host many cloud projects.
You might prefer HashiCorp’s Terraform, because it has more features and updates, and it integrates well with other HashiCorp products. Other times, you might prefer OpenTofu’s Terraform, because it has more freedom and flexibility, and it has more community involvement and contribution.
Are you excited for OpenTofu? Which one will you choose?
