When Oracle forked Hudson, claimed rights to the project name, the community forked the project and rename it to opensource Jenkins which is widely used even today. Hudson died long ago.

It’s hard stay open source when mega corporations just take your work and charge for it without supporting your development.

Thank you Jeff. Even though you said Hashcorp went to a BSL a few days ago, I can bring this news to my boss’s attention like I found it on my own.

Only fireship can make me both laugh and cry out loud about code.

I love how Fireship singlehandedly doubled the amount of stars on a repo in 2 hours

I prioritize open-source as a user but I can't agree with huge corps taking advantage of open-source code to make Billions and don't even share some breadcrumbs with the developers, one of the major examples being the OpenSSL debacle not that long ago.

One of my open source projects is being commercially used by a very big cloud company. They initially reached out and offered me to do an interview with them, telling me about how they are using my project as well.
it was not the right time to take that offer for me but the sad part is, the aforementioned project has not even received a single PR or support from that company.

Sadly, open-source is free work for others with little to no return

Gotta love how Fireship can both make hilarious videos that help me be a better programmer and simultaneously make me want to quit and take up farming.

The ending is just a stroke of creative comedic genius 😂

Actually I can relate to what HashiCorp is doing.

The same reason why docker change their policy.

They are open source to help developers but big mega corp just exploit their kindness.

Those big mega corp should help pay the bills of open source project that they use to sell their service.

0:27 Correction: MongoDB and Elastic Search are licensed under SSPL, but not BSL.

It's so funny to me that the open-source movement is now struggeling with the exact thing that Richard Stallman opposed them for. Which is that "source code availability" (open source) does NOT mean libre software that you have the control over (instead the other way around).
Edit: an also nice to see that for big projects at least the community recovers.

Blame the big cloud providers for taking away all their business

Thank you for explaining Open Source. Sad that this is now needed after people spreading lies and try to redefine its meaning.

That's why my trust goes only to the FSF, GNU and the Linux Foundation. I can understand their decision but it hurts especially for projects in production.

I’m not even a developer or anything of that sort, in fact I have very little coding experience and sometimes I only understand like 10% of the video, yet I still keep coming back for more!

I think it makes sense to not be completely open when there is potential for Amazontto just take your hard work and make all the money off of it. I've thought clearly something has to change within open source and I think we're just starting to see the beginning of the massive changes coming to keep massive corps from just taking your work for granted.

I get it, and I think its a very complex issue with no super obvious answer.

Fireship is going to be so mad that I went and starred that repo

Also: Lightbend put the Akka framework under a form of BSL in the autumn of 2022. Now, Apache Pekko (a community fork) is an incubator project.

I'm actually supportive of this move, although I fear it'll be hashcorp's demise. Massive corporations benefiting from without supporting open source might not violate the letter of open-source but it definitely violates the spirit of open-source in my opinion.
