Unfortunately, we no longer have the same shared goals as a country. It used to be that one half of the country may not have agreed with the other half, but they at least had the same shared goals. Everyone was on the same page in terms of where we wanted to end up, even if we had different ways of getting there. Having shared goals is conducive to making the necessary political compromises. However, you cannot reconcile with political foes when your goals are opposite. It’s game theory, ultimately. How do you compromise with people that you perceive want to destroy your country or take away your freedom? Another sizable portion of the country believe that the USA is evil, illegitimate, on stolen land and should cease to exist, among other destructive beliefs. That’s just how people feel, and it’s why it’s nearly impossible for folks to reconcile or be willing to compromise. A national divorce, or a splitting of the country, is inevitable at this point. It’s just a matter of when, how it will occur, and ultimately what it all will look like.
