In soccer, when a forward gets in behind the defense, the goalkeeper will take a few steps toward the ball to cut off the angle before the shot. Same concept as this shield.

You're now 3.5 feet away from them if your buckler was touching them, and they need a reach weapon to connect with you behind the tiny shield

I got one of the cold steel poly propylene bucklers and used it as the boss on a 30 inch round shield

That bump makes it look like it would deflect swords straight in towards your body.

As someone who has used sword and buckler for sparring I can confirm that it protects a lot more than you would expect, especially with the correct techniques.
It may look light but holding it out does tire the arm out.
And for those say use it to punch, look up a punching shield, that's a concusion maker without the right protection.

Supposed to swipe at the sword with it to knock it off its path toward you opening up your opponent for an easy thrust
