For those who are looking for each weapon type i'd recommend these:
Sword: Gaze Of The Vortex
Greatsword: Dominator
Polearm: Flayer
Daggers: Zwill Crossblades
Firearm: Death Penalty

I prefer the Gaze of the Vortex. It's the strongest sword in the game thanks to its passive abilities, and being able to stay airborne literally forever in combat is so much fun.

The ring of lucii is more powerful than anything on the list. Max your magic ability and you will be Able to instantly kill any enemy. Adamantoise and naglfar included. Not to mention it does wonders for the item less dungeon vault "menace in costlemark" although it's the most powerful weapon in the game. (Nothing else comes close) it can ruin the gameplay experience. I wouldn't recommend using it unless your really stuck on something

I managed to get my hands on the Ultima weapon very early on the game, and it carried me through a good chunk of the game before I needed to get a weapon that was stronger, just felt like I should mention it.

Balmung deals LESS damage the less MP your have, not more. It's proportional. :D

Death Penalty can also be obtained at Chapter 8+ by defeating a lvl 99 Monster on the quest "Oh Partner, my Partner" where you go to Vespool during the night and have to fight a Naked Lady wrapped on a 2 headed snake. (I done it at lvl 99 and she was a handful, had to spam Hi-elixirs / Max-elixirs / Max-potions / Remedy / Golden Needle / Antidotes so Be READY for a hardcore fight.)

Death Penalty is also given from the Hunter that tasks you of killing a Daemon in the Vesperpool that is lvl 99. You can get the quest at lower levels too. I am sure this isn't any big news however.

I have a greatsword equipped called the dominator, it does 583 attack and is found as treasure around duscae.

I would say my favorite weapon is the Ultima Blade, weaker than Balmung but it's still beastly since you can get it early game and it has the same bonus as Drain Lance.

after the terra wars quest, sarah's shot sword is fun to use in combination with the magitek exosuit to end fights without being damaged at all

My favourite is Balmung (or Ultima) because I like the idea of Noctis returning to his unique category so the others can have best in class too. But Zwill Crossblades is fast and good for warp strikes too. And there's nothing quite like the area of effect on the Shield of the Just when backtracking through low level areas!
