If you rough up the inside of the hive or by adding a few holes here and there, you can encourage the bees to produce more propolis which helps to insulate the hive while keeping it resistant to disease/parasites.

That hive is a long langstroth with foundationless frames - top bar is a bit different :) what you have is generally an improvement over top bars.
