We all think we know gold: it's beautiful, expensive and unchanging. But how much do you really know about its properties? What happens when you mix it with mercury? And what else will it react with?

Niels Bohr was once asked to guard the Nobel Prize gold medals of a couple of scientists who were fleeing the Nazi regime, known for looting treasures. When the Nazis invaded Bohr's native Denmark, the only way he could hide the medals was by dissolving them in aqua regia, as demonstrated above. The medals remained undetected, and after the war, they were brought out of their mixture and restored to their recipients.

My old chemistry/physics teacher back in 7-9th grade told us a tale of when she was a very new teacher she demonstrated mercury for her students and showed how nuts and screws would float in the mercury. She had then used her quite new wedding ring to show that gold sinks because it is denser than mercury.. Of course the mercury then started to eat away at the ring. She rushed off to the jeweler and the ring was saved although it had become quite a bit slimmer =)

I was wondering if there were 2 liquid elements to make gold via chemistry? Like mixing two ingredients to make a solid piece of gold (if albeit a small nugget-sized piece)
