China is making big inroads into the EV market, with manufacturers like BYD, XPeng, NIO, Geely and MG all attracting international attention. But are Chinese EVs really THAT bad? And is it ever going to be a serious player? This video explains what's going on and what's coming next.

Nailed it about the fossil burners being assembled from bits and bobs.

BYD is building a massive assembly plant in Brazil. The Brazilians said where will we get the parts to allow you to assemble our cars. BYD said we make everything ourselves, but we do not want to do this in Brazil. So you provide the entrepreneurs for the ancillary parts and we will provide the engineers to show you how to build the parts. We can do this because in China BYD makes every single part from the screws to the giga pressed frame/bodies and we own a chip company that can make all the necessary chips for an EV. That's why we never had supply chain problems.

BYD owns lithium mines and car Carrier ships for shipping their own vehicles.

I bought Japanese (Mitsubishi) for decades but have changed to Chinese (MG) as Mitsubishi are pulling out of the UK and my local dealer switched to MG. Two years so far with MG, no regrets.

Ironically Japan are behind the curve on EVs.

We have an MG ZS long range, took one out for a test drive to put my wife off the idea last year. It is a great car, we tried half a dozen others, it was the best of the lot for drive, build quality & price.

Spot on Dave. I have an MG4 Trophy and think it’s a great car for value and performance

Totally agreed and I am looking at MG or BYD for my next EV. But that is 10 months away, so who knows which new companies have arrived!

32, 000 into MG ownership. Economical and reliable MG5EV. Averaging 4.2 miles per kwh over the last year including last winter and cold springtime.
Less gadgets means less battery wasted where the human brain can cope on it's own. But it's still got more than on my ladt 2 new ICE cars

I worked for MG Rover and later when they went bust SIAC motors and could see the passion these people have for building great cars and couldn't wait to get my hands on and now drive an MG4

I’m proudly driving my Chinese built Tesla Model Y. Much better build quality than a lot of the American built Teslas that were imported into the U.K.

I watched your Ford Video with interest. You mentioned that Legacy Car Companies are in trouble, and late in the EV market. Here in UK going on about Battery making companies. As you say they will be still in the planning stage. I think the Sodium and solid state Batteries are the future, if not something else. I think Lithium Iron Batteries are on their way out, too late UK.

China have always struggled to build ICE drivetrains, hence their own investment in the Volkswagen group, with massive joint venture factories and the dominance of Volkswagen car sales for a long time in China. But in EVs, China has been able to develop their own world leading drivetrains.

the west didn’t even bother to learn from Tesla, but at the end EVs are not for me, the lithium battery is still not safe and entirely not environmentally friendly

The MG 4 is on my shortlist for my next car :)

Very interesting Dave and well explained.

But what about hidden quality issues? Eg are their cars galvanised? Certainly, on the face of it many of their vehicles seem excellent.

BYD sold 3500 cars in Europe in ten months, MG 170, 000 electric cars. BYD are still almost unknown. No, Japanese cars were not rubbish, in the 1960s.First Japanese car (Daihatsu )sold in UK in 1965, perfectly good, just unknown in the UK.

Great video Dave, I agree wholeheartedly, to think Chinese production is rubbish is just simply wrong.

I would suggest that Japan produced better cars than the UK in the mid 1960's, Toyota, and some poor ones, Datsun.
AS for who makes what. look at Texas Instruments, once made in Texas, then to Malaysia, now who knows?
I once had a discussion with a London Taxi driver who berated my Volvo as foreign and telling me I should be using a Ford Granada. He was unaware that at that time Volvo bodies and many other parts came from the UK, whilst the Granada was built in Germany. Now much manufacturing has moved across the world. As for quality, our MG4 seems to be fine, as good as our UK built Nissan LEAF.

Expect to see more Chinese EV’s in Europe as the US is closing its market to them. Sam Evans, the Electric Viking based in Australia has much to say about this.
