Two things,
1st, if you look there are two tabs on the button, those are the clips and pinching them together allows you to remove the button and properly clean it
2nd, you want to put the gamecube together with the lid open otherwise the lid switch will be on the wrong side of the tab that pushes it so the lid won't open without breaking it
