How to Find Your Windows Product Key

In this video, I show you several tools (including the Command Prompt, PowerShell, NirSoft's Prodkey, and finding the Certificate of Authenticity) to find the product key for Windows. At least one of these methods can be used to recover the key for Windows 10, 8, 7 and the server versions of Windows. Though it's hidden in Window's Activation screen and inacccessbile in your computer's BIOS, you can retrieve an OEM key from the BIOS or UEFI, or obtain it from the registry.

In case you want to copy and paste the commands, here is the one for the Command Prompt:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

and here is the one for PowerShell:

(get-wmiobject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey

Thanks a lot for the video! I had my HDD changed recently, the service guy did a terrible job and forgot to activate windows on newly installed SSD thus it was showing a Windows Activation prompt again and again. I tried all methods but they were of no avail as none worked. The Windows PowerShell method mentioned by you worked for me like a charm and I myself activated my Windows by putting the original Product Key.

Use a P-touch label maker if your vision of Windows did not come with a sticker, but you know it. Print the key and stick it on your PC. I do this for all products I purchase. I note the seller's name, the date of purchase, serial number, date registered, etc. This can be very helpful in the future. You could also put that information into a database app. I keep all documentation and user manuals in a file folder labeled with the device's name.
