This is one of the best introductions to Zen Buddhism I have ever come across - especially considering the time limit of 25 mins!

One important elemnt that I think is missing though is the experience of 'breakthrough' that occurs either during koan practice or, that of Shikantaza, which is very similar to Contemplative Prayer in that it centres around the concept Silence. The 'breakthrough' is, in a way, something that makes Zen special. It is formally called 'kensho' and is when the student has their first glimpse in their true, non-dual nature. Such an inital glimpse will vary both in depth and in duration BUT it is only after this has occured that Zen practise truly begins. Of course having glimpsed non-duality, everything changes - and nothing does!

This 'non-duality' is the same as that as expressed via the Upanishads and even many Christian mystics such a Meister Eckhart who referred to it as the 'Godhead', ie that which is the source of the Holy Trinity.

I have really enjoyed your explanation. I married into Soto Zen Buddhist family, here in Japan. My biggest reservation about a lot of late 20th century Zen Buddhists who've carried the message around the world is that it overwhelmingly seems to be to places like Malibu, Monte Carlo, Tunbridge Wells, and Ibiza.

Satori is not really a goal I would say.

So, you are saying God gave Buddhists the finger? 😂 God gave Christians the finger too, and they worshipped IT instead of God. Good for Muhammad for forbidding worship, or even images, of the finger.
