Prof. P. Balram is an Impeccable research scientist providing a balanced talk on overview of every aspect of the science publishing. Every talk opens the doorways to think cautiously and critically in research. Looking forth for some more talks on pressing issues of Science.

One of the best lectures I have heard, from a reputable Indian scientist. I was so pleased to hear him because, when he was the editor in chief of 'Current Science', he accepted for publication quite a number of my submissions to the 'Historical Notes' section of CS. He mentioned in his speech, that he enjoyed reading the essays of Eugene Garfield. Me too. Similarly, I also enjoyed reading Dr. Balaram's editorials in Current Science.

This lecture raises many relevant questions about academic publications and the emphasis on quantity over quality. We must remember that it is the quality of work that is remembered, not the quantity. When we consider the work of influential scientists who have paved the way for generations, we often find that their publication records are surprisingly short, yet very powerful.

Thank you Dr Balaram, the best lecture so far intellectually stimulating, insightful and does force the academicians/scientists to introspect

Solution is to deny academic positions to the masters of publications only.
Top priority must be given to those who put their academic ideas and work into practice first not after securing an haloed academic position irrespective of age or school.
Academicians have forgotten that knowlege is for prosparity to the socity not to themselves, particularly in India.

Excellent analysis of scientific publications and ranking systems. Yes it has becoming a marketing exercise rather than true science. Thanks Prof. Dr . Balaram .

Enlightening lecture. A whole ecosystem has been built to feed the thriving business of publishing. I am surprised at few comments about race and ideology. Research is supported by public and hence the findings should be accessible and affordable. Unjust profiteering is simply an exploitation of citizens.

Excellent. But why acadamecians then link degrees with publications. Why not have a top notch review committees to review theses and recommond degrees even without publications? In fact Ph.Ds are awarded indirectly by Journals!!!

Great talk. I agree with 'scientist = vain'. Business overcomes the science.

Science publishing has also queered the pitch for all other disciplines. The authors are hugely funded for laboratory infrastructure. The citation index and other such metrics are applied across the board even when context specific studies can't compete with the universality of science. These metrics push academics to run after meaningless numbers and odious comparisons in university campuses!

Today in India unfortunately uneducated people are being propped up as experts to the delight of their foreign backers. Fortunately India still has islands of excellence and world class leaders in every discipline such as Prof. Balaram. Prof. Balaram is comparable to the very best globally and also a great Indian nationalist. A great personality as well a pure Aryan in every manner. India is proud of him.
