taibbi is a bright light in a very dark journalism and information landscape in the united states.

Matt is an important voice in the debate over how journalism should be! Thank you for interviewing him at length like this.

Matt Taibbi is a champ. Incredibly well read and I always appreciate his insights into how far off the path journalism has gone.

I miss Taibbi on "Useful Idiots". He's one of our best journalists and journalistic authors.

Taibbi was a gentleman for not correcting the host. Chomsky’s book is “Manufacturing Consent, ” not “Manufacturing Consensus.”

I love Matt’s knowledge and criticism of media; he has a deep fascination of the industry and how it has transformed over the past couple of decades.

Thanks for the wonderful discussion. Always good to hear from Taibbi.
For me this was an introduction to Ms McLean. Very impressed!

When the hosts were discussing the limitations of Substack regarding long form investigative journalsim, I would disagree. Matt Taibbi's story on the Virginia School Board earlier this year was a three part series and was very in depth. Also his 4 part series on the Lawyers that ate California was excellent. My hope is that there are enough people willing to be engaged in long format stories from writers on Substack like taibbi and others. Also these stories can be integrated onto other platforms. Russell Brand has picked up some of Matts reporting to give it an even wider audience. They can do both. Weekly content to keep their subscribers like me happy AND do good investigative work as well.

Great content. I sometimes wonder if anyone reads Bernays and Sinclair's "Brass Check" anymore. The discussion at the end was a case study in sampling error; whenever the word "people" was used, it reflected -- for me -- a good look at the Establishment mindset of the miderators rather than an accurate reflection of "people" on Main Street

Im surprised that this content does not have much larger audience than it currently does. Not Pop Culture's finest hour...

@42:00 Luigi gives an anecdote of how Youtube curates our views. Without disputing fundamental premise of his example, I need to push back with what some of us on left feel is a new, insidious practice connected to capitalist media markets. Among a crew of dozen's of online connections I discuss politics with weekly, upon opening most of our key "left/socialist" segments, all of us are now hit with ads from what could only be described as neo/paleo conservative media platforms .. especially Koch funded Daily Wire. Most of us are old hands in left world and simply drop the garbage but effect on referencing segments has been chilling. Some of us, myself included, have stopped linking deep dives from Youtube to curious/skeptics who are just now re-evaluating the extent to which they are the "Consented, " be it the online curious or among personal connections.

I don't agree that the audience attention span isn't capable of paying attention. There are survivors still focused on information, such people haven't died out.

Why Hugo Chavez has Keynes on one side and Thatcher on both sides? Why is Friedman on the top of Chaves?

48:55 The same dynamic Bethany mentions here is also true in the scientific world. Very little original reporting, not enough basic research.
