The Acolyte Episode 7 Review - This should have been a Movie.

We arrive at episode 7 of The Acolyte where much is revealed! And I found the penultimate ep … lackluster.

Having thought this was a 6 episode series I was ironically stoked when ep 5 and 6 were much more my cuppa Star Wars tea! Had begun very much hoping I would be into the 2nd half of the season and the series would finish strong for me. But the mystery and reveals just aren’t hitting and the characters I want to care about just aren’t working for me in this flashback based story telling style. I think a chronological movie, with these characters getting a chance to carry more emotional weight by sharing their journey and sacrifices early on; would have been more for me.

Alas, one to go and I don’t think this one will end up landing how I’d hoped. But more Qimir is exciting! And potential Osha dark side looms!?

No editing on this one/ no inserts etc, apologies, stream of consciousness thoughts about The Acolyte Episode 7!

The Best Episode of the series so far for me was episode 6, which still had its flaws. Really enjoyed 5 for the most part as well. And episode 3 a few weeks back had me intrigued (largely thanks to Jodie Turner-Smith's perfomance but the show overall hadn't been for me. Now with my investment in more characters than just Sol I am feeling this tale of a Galaxy Far Far Away! (Osha has grown on me with the help of that backstory ep 3, ironically Mae... also played by Amandla Sternberg... has not haha) This episode in particular feeling like it explored new stakes and new ideas and our ever growing understanding of what makes Qimir/ The Stranger/ This particular Sith tick so much more interesting. (And wise of them to lean into Manny Jacinto's hotness.

Star Wars is a fandom that I haven't really dabbled into for years. I've kept up with the shows for the most part. (I've seen them all but haven't been day one must watch with the majority of them.) I've seen every movie opening night since Episode One (somewhere I have a picture of me dressed as Darth Maul waiting for that midnight line).

But with a few exceptions (Andor, The Last Jedi, Bill Burr's episodes of Mandolorian) it's been a galaxy far far away that I've felt pretty casually towards. There's absolutely a rush hearing a lightsaber ignite, or the wail or a tie fighter in DOLBY surround, or even going on Rise of the Resistance and FEELING like you're in George Lucas' mind, but I feel like so much of that comes from my childhood love of New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, more than the present.

I think how good is your villain is what really makes or breaks a show like the Acolyte. I wish they show more of Qimir's story, his side of the story is the most intriguing, not Mae, not Osha. We know Mae was picked up by Qimir at some point, maybe he was on the planet at that time too (he knew the poisonous herb there), sneaked in and killed the surviving witches and retrieved Mae. We only have one episode left and I don't know how much plot they will cover in 35 minutes. Let's hope we find out more about Qimir.

It's so wierd that we have 2 flashbacks episodes, both taking place in the same day...but we got them 4 episodes apart.

The episodes are choppy and we cut away from scenes I would have liked to have lingered on. The writing is all over the place. There has been so much potential in every episode but after watching this episode, I just find myself not caring about any character’s journey. I keep trying and waiting for it to just come together. The fight choreography has been fantastic though.

The power of Star wars, the power of marvel, the power of Disney making it all crap!

I think this series got caught in the middle of the "greenlight everything coming across the desk as a series" phase that Disney went through during Covid, but was pitched as a movie. Im pretty sure thats why we havent gotten a movie since TRoS

This show absolutely should have been a movie that was edited down. Doing flashback episodes 4 episodes apart is pretty terrible. There is a lot that needs to be wrapped up in one episode. There simply wasn’t enough material.

I'm enjoying the show myself, but you don't have to apologize for not. I found the witches interesting, but I'm a fan of the mysticism part of Star Wars. Also, a pissed off wookie Jedi is terrifying.

"Someday those noble intentions you all have will destroy the galaxy." The Empire is straight up evil in The Acolyte but the Jedi on the other hand create bad decisions due to rushing into situations before trying to access the situation.

Disneys model for D+ Tv series is always to write it like a single film, and then pad it out to 8 hours.

I now have a theory that the Zabrak mother has taken over Quimir’s body and has been him the entire time. Otherwise where does Quimir fit into this whole story? Is the finale just going to be all of his backstory???

I loved this episode! Finally got more answers!! Sol’s past was crazy! Imagine holding that burden for 16 years. It all makes so makes more sense why Mae was after those Jedi! Can’t believe the twist we had in still trying to get my head around it..

I'm admittedly commenting before watching the full video, but i will simply say this: I stopped the episode halfway through and told my wife, "this should have been a movie."

I genuinely love The Acolyte. Is it the best? No. It's not admittedly, but I think I see through the flaws to the vision of what they were hoping to accomplish. And the actors really throwing themselves in this trying to get there makes me love it, too. The ingredients and potential to make a compelling show are there, but they just weren't mixed together quite right. Still, hopeful for the finale, and possible a season 2🤞.

It actually feels at one time it was a chronological movie about twins. Then they split it into 8 parts and moved the order around to make it into a mystery. I like the show but not because it's a "mystery". I do think binging would have helped let everyone watch and then judge it all rather than give up on it early on. I have a tiny bit of faith this will wrap up in a 30 min finale but have zero faith we will get anything over 45 min

I also feel like this should’ve been an earlier episode that connects with ep 3 so we would’ve felt more invested in the characters but I guess it would’ve gotten in the way of the “mystery”

They could have kept the main script but kept actress Carrie-Anne Moss (Indara) for longer. For example, Indira is assigned to investigate Jedi disappearances. Eventually she realizes that Osha has something to do with it, and decides to keep it a secret so as not to reveal her past actions to the Jedi Council. When she finds Osha, she realizes that the missing Jedi are not dead. Some of them tried to be converted into an acolytes by Osha. The first order is to kill Indara because she's too powerful to face her alone. Then comes the moment when she's killed and we start the story with Sol.

I'm not sure why there are two flashback episodes.. could have been episode 3. But presented from character perspectives instead.

There are so many moving parts, but still lots of questions

At least we finally have more answers about this memory

Sol, still fighting. But i have this feeling, he is also fighting subconsciously as well.

Also this episode flew by. Hopefully next episode will be a bit longer

I honestly feel that this show is trying to explore different lores. One about witches and the other about The acolyte. However, it's pacing is very rushed and all over with limited run times in each episode. It's throwing me off. I love Star Wars and absolutely loved all the Disney plus shows. This one is the first time I feel off balance with the show. I feel like it's equivalent to Ryan Reynolds green latern where everything was stuffed and cram into one movie. This is what this show is like.

The witches creating a Force Dyad had an intriguing pull in for me. That should have been a gateway for the Dark Force user, using the Acolyte to uncover as well as for the Jedi. The clash should have been between the two to discover how the twins were concieved. In that time, we could have a scenario how the Jedi view the force and how Qimir views it. Really dig into the lore of that and have that be the focal point of the show to allow the audience immerse ourselves into this philosophical debate on how to use the force. Then, the Dyad as well as using the force to create life could catch attention from a more powerful force user, like the Sith.

Everything about the flashbacks as well as too much emphasis on the twins is throwing me off.

Overall, I agree with your assessment that this probably should have been a movie instead of a show. It is what it is! However, aside from my criticism, there is a lot I do love: Qimir and his perception of the force; the fact the we see other force users (even though not lot of lore is explored and still leaves questions); fight scenes are absolutely the best I've seen in Star Wars for a long time!

Overall, it's just an okay show for me! But love hearing how other fans are enjoying it and hearing their voices 😊
