An interview with Nathaniel Popper the author of Trolls of Wall Street - How the Outcasts and Insurgents Are Hacking the Markets. Trolls of Wall Street is a new book telling the story of an improbable gang of self-proclaimed “degenerates” who made WallStreetBets into a cultural movement that moved from the fringes of the internet to the center of Wall Street, upending the global financial markets and changing how an entire generation thinks about money, investing, and themselves.

It tells the story of the people like Keith Gill (known online as Roaring Kitty) who made and lost millions, battling with each other—and with Wall Street—for power and status. It is a sobering account of how millions of young Americans became obsessed with money and the markets, casting a long and lasting influence over finance, politics, and popular culture.

I honestly thought that the floating pen sponsorship was a joke at first.

I remember being in the chat teaching Patrick how to pronounce "Meme" correctly in one of the first Livestreams during the Gamestop saga, and now he's involved in books about financial memes! Very cool. Love your takes on things Mr Boyle, and especially your sense of humour. Glad to see how far your channel has come along! I hope you are very proud of your successes, and you deserve full credit!

The funny thing about watching you interview someone is that I just now realized I’ve heard you speak for HOURS… and I’ve never heard you interact with another person until just now.

I’ll never forget on early wall st bets when someone was explaining that they put all of their retirement savings into $SPY calls because “stocks only go up”. I hope that person is doing well

I glanced at this and thought Patrick got Matt Damon on the channel.

Years ago there was a penny stock market in Denver. The stocks would be boosted at cocktail parties by CEOs who would say, "I'm not supposed to tell you this but (stock X)is on its way up.
Now such people don't go to cocktail parties, they stay at home on the internet.

I said that the time and I continue to maintain that whatever other silliness happened one effect of the GameStop short squeeze was a market-driven correction to hedge fund manipulation. I consider this a good thing overall

This video is a fascinating counterpoint to Dan Olson's "This is Financial Advice, " which is about the memestock "movement" and how it developed after the initial bubble burst. Or, as Olson describes it, how they transformed into essentially a financial investment cult.

I was a member of wsb before it blue up.. around the time of GameStop I got banned from wall street bets when I suggested not to trade 1dte otm calls. I suggested that instead buy leaps that are itm already on stocks you know about well. At first I was upset I got banned but I decided to sell the same calls those idiots where buying like lottery tickets. My portfolio is healthy thanks wsb for the consistent yields.

I am not professing any academia; however, I do understand how crowds work on Bourbon Street in New Orleans -- Listening to you both, respectfully, I am sensing a similar vibe of when I was trained to hawk rhythm and blues clubs. First, if it had anything to do with me, I would already know about it. Second, there are times to hawk (bring them in), and times to watch (let them pass). It was a Master's class from Lenny, via Vegas via Vietnam via Brooklyn. I am grateful for the complexity there and here in this moment.

Im glad someone drew the scholarly map of how the occupy era led to GameStop.
One of the most pernicious GameStop takes I saw were along the lines of “lol we’re more effective than occupy” which, aside from debating the size of beans, was also just more unnecessary generational warfare.
