Many people use logical fallacies in arguments. This is particularly common on social media. One such fallacy is the slippery slope fallacy, which is often used by politicians, but is also made when people are arguing against science or public health measures, and one person who has done this is Dr Vinay Prasad. In this video, Dr Susan Oliver, scientist and part-time ski bunny, will be discussing Dr Prasad’s logical fallacy and why the slippery slope fallacy is just a fallacy. If you see anyone using this fallacy, please share this video with them.

Here in Scotland, some of the mass vaccination sites were manned by the Army. Not a gun to be seen anywhere.

I've had my colleagues use slippery slope arguments by name. "Well, this is a slippery slope.... etc." I just say "If you were to come across a sign that stated 'slippery slope' on a trail you were hiking on to your destination, would you immediately turn away and not carry on? Or would you perhaps just walk a little more carefully and then make it safely to your goal?"

Vinay-boy he’s another one that’s really just gone off the deep end. Thank you for this-he’s blocked a lot of people -it seems anyone who has a different view than his-although he’s another free speech absolutist.

as a skier myself, I love that you did this one on the slopes! How appropriate. It would be nice if the algorithm pushed these types of videos like they do with the likes of John Campbell.

Again, you make the best arguments using logic, numbers, and common sense. He blocked you??? He is afraid of you, clear and simple.

Another great clip Dr Oliver. I make sure to let the ads run in full on your videos, my little way of saying thanks.

Great job again Dr. Oliver. "Most people aren't assholes." (I laughed!) Unfortunately, it only takes a small number of those to cause many of our problems. Thanks for being a force for good.

Thanks for another excellent video Dr. Oliver. I have to admit that I had no idea that there were slippery slopes in Australia. Although I'm a certified geezer, I had never seen mention of skiing in Australia here in the U.S.

The series is quite interesting. I studied these topics in statistics and logic, but a refresh with a different take is quite interesting. Cheers from Canada

If there's a slippery slope we should be concerned with it's pseudoscience and fallacies being used by academics who should know better. Thanks for the video, great work as usual. Nice to see snow, NZ has just closed its North Island ski fields, no snow and too warm to make any.

A president can invoke the Insurrection Act (of 1807) under five circumstances.

First, if there is a fear of action to overthrow a state, the president can send in troops if a state legislature asks him to.
Second, the president can do so at the request of the state’s governor if the legislature cannot convene.
Third if there is a threat of federal law being broken, the president could also deploy the military. (This section was used by Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy against Arkansas, Mississippi and twice in Alabama when the states refused to desegregate schools).

Under the fourth and fifth circumstances, the president can invoke the act if there is domestic violence that threatens the rights of any “part or class of the people, ” and the “constituted authorities of that state are unable, fail, or refuse to protect” rights, privileges or immunity, or if the domestic violence opposes or obstructs the execution of federal law.

So a massive pandemic would have to devolve into one or more of the criteria above.

Thanks for giving your opinion on Dr. Prasad. He's been bothering me for a while. But you've got to hand it to him, he's figured out how to build a massive anti-vax audience.

But, but, but, the slippery slope fallacy is so very useful when your reasoning don't have a leg to stand on! 🙀
