actually this looks like a textbook case of traction alopecia, where repeated ongoing tension on the hair follicle leads to that hair follicle kinda just giving up. It's quite common for people who wear their hair in tight ponytails/braids for extended periods of time like jojo used to do

More like traction alopecia from all those years of high pony tails. I know because it happened to me 😂

I have trichotillomania, it’s been an ongoing thing for my whole life. It started with eyelashes, then eyebrows and then my hair. When I’m really anxious and stressed it gets worse. It really sucks

I have trichotillomania and have pulled out my hair since I was 8 years old(going on 15 years). Spreading awareness about it is so important. If you know someone with Trich, try to support them instead of telling them to "just stop". I would give anything in the world to have my hair and sanity back but I'm trying so hard so please stop telling me what to do because I KNOW my hair looks bad.

Also probably her famous side ponytail didn't help at all too, poor girl

Well tbh I’m glad she cut off her hair to let it heal. Like I remember when everyone noticed and we all did the jojo let your hair down trend. A lot of people turned it into a joke but it honestly began out of pure concern from her dance moms fan base that were old enough to notice it. When she finally let her hair down she seemed so much happier, and then when she cut her hair now she’s like a hundred times more confident you can see it in her face. I think she had a phobia of letting her hair down because the high pony became her trademark look and she had that whole scrunchie and bow line at Claire’s and target. I’m happy to see her healing her hair

She's adorable with short hair, way better than the longer hair in fact it makes her look like an adult and not a child. The little swoosh at the top is quite lovely.

The fact that Dr. Youn knows more about today's culture & social media takes than I do. Literally, I always learn something new from your videos or shorts, either media or medicine related😂❤ You're so amazing dude 🎉

I’m so glad to see trichotillomania being mentioned by someone with such a large following. It is certainly not spoken of enough or known, so it is extremely embarrassing to deal with it as we are judged even more than people who deal with other BFRBs. Even my own mother has called me insane for doing it after explaining to her what it was. I hope anyone who suffers from this or other conditions can feel safe and supported in their circle and can find relief ❤️.

I have had trichotillomania since I was 11 thank you so much for talking about this subject. I was so confused as a kid, I thought I was not normal. I look it up and turns out I have trich. I don't have it in my scalp BUT only if a have a bad itch for it. Mostly, my eyebrows, pubic hair, eyelashes and my face hair has suffered from this. Gross I know but you have to be open about this stuff. Anyone else with trich, let me tell you what I did to cope: usually I will play UNSTRESSFUL videogames like Minecraft or Stardew valley, (just something chill overall) I often got my nails done because it was hard to pick with acrylics, I played with figet toys, (unironically) sometimes I would wax my hair so I didn't have anything to pick, find a hobby that occupies your hands. I hope this helped anybody because I sure wish someone would have told me this a long time ago.

You underestimate the dangers of high ponytails

honestly jojo seems like a cool person who is just doing what she likes and doesn’t care what people think

No all of these comments are wrong, this isn’t alopecia this is from her stress she would pick at the side of her head due to all the stress she was put under the show Dance Moms but it could also be from those high ponytails.

I used to do this to my hairline of my forehead when I was younger. It was so frustrating because I always had bangs, and when I got older and no longer wanted my bangs I was embarrassed to do anything with my hair because my bald parts would show. I had extreme anxiety Back then as well and other OCD characteristics. Today I no longer have those bald spots and my OCD is way less profound.
It's important everyone knows that you aren't alone! Bad habits can get better with time and help. You are not what you suffer from!!!

I also suffered from trichotillomania. first I didn't even realize that I'm ripping my hair out when I'm anxious, nervous and stressed but soon my mom started to realize and got me into therapy because she knew, something was wrong.

It was a long process from age 13 til age 19 to become strong enough to do other things than ripping my hair out to compensate my anxiety.

Now I'm almost 28 and still sometimes when I get nervous or stressed I catch myself playing with strands of my hair in order to rip them out but normally I realize it soon enough to stop and do something else, like snapping a rubber band on my arm and stuff.

I just wish, that anyone that suffers from trichotillomania, find someone they can trust and that they can talk to someone about their fears that they are going through an be helped out. 🙏

(sorry if my English sucks 😅 I'm Austrian, but I do my best 🙏)

I’ve had stress-related and malnutrition related hairloss aggravated by OCD skin-picking. The best I could do was cut it short as you can see it is now (it used to be down to my waist). To be honest getting the chop was quite liberating. I still struggle badly with OCD skin picking but since my hair weighs so much less short it doesn’t fall out on its own thank goodness!

Finally someone mentioned trichotillomania. I have this and I have scars on my arms because of it.
