From PIXELS to PRINT: Creating a Zine from my Art

In this video I make an 8 page zine using one sheet of paper—A ZINE full of silly Spongebob puns, like SpongeRob Zombie, Sponge Corn-on-the-Bob, GrungeBob... and lots more.

I experiment with non traditional ways to use my studio printer to create a unique look. Stay tuned for the second half where I finish the zine off with some Gocco (screen) printed linework on the cover.

12:10 you can draw a rectangle to fit your artboard, then go to Object > Path > Split into Grid & bingo, banco bongo you have perfect shapes for your zines!

Doing it this way is nice too because you add gutters to each that’ll be equal as well. Cuts out all the guesswork.

As an offset-printer I really love the approach of separating digital artwork and print it color by color. It adds to make the printing process more comprehensible. Also using the Riso-brushes feels like drawing a print with all of the Halftones.

I taught middle school reading/writing, and did this folding zine with my kids. They were so impressed at how theirs came together. I think I still even have a few of them.

I love the entire philosophy of making zines and I want to start making zines! I think you forgot to factor in the margins of the entire page.

Thanks for sharing this. I have my students make zines about things they are experts in or things they would like to teach the person who is reading it. They do think its wild to make them out of a single sheet of paper.

Make sure to “boop” when you fold it. That’s super important!

This looks amazing. I have made many zines and there is always a little border that I trim before folding. Even if I print borderless. But every printer is different.

If you want to duplicate a path and reduce or expand it by a specific amount you can go:
Object>path>offset path

Edit: I just realised I wasn’t subscribed. So sorry, I’ve fixed this terrible oversight now 😊

Very cool ! Nice job ! What is the advantage of printing the colors separately ?

Need to double the inner borders to match the outside (or inversely, half the outer borders). Although I'm sure you figured it out already. Not a SpongeBob fan myself, but I can sure appreciate your puns and artwork! :)

Was borderless selected?

Also, this kind of stuff is super cool. These kind of projects A++

The template is just a digital file right? It’s trying to charge me shipping?
