Poor spiders get the "hydraulic system fail" warning light before they die.

I have actually never wondered why bugs die like this but I’m happy that I now know

As a tarantula keeper. The leg curl is called a death curl. But they dont actually flip over. They just stay right side up

Understood, next time I find an upside-down dead animal I will be able to identify it as an Ankylosaurus

This reminds me of a time I saw a mosquito instantly drop dead in mid flight and fall to the table in front of me. Really weird seeing something just switch off like that.

For those wondering, the "ankylosaur" shown in the video is borealopelta and it sinking with its back down is why it has such well preserved skin and armor.

The bloat and float hypothesis is now disproven. Ankylosaurs were not capable of floating even if gas bloating occurred. They would just flip rapidly even on their way to the sea or lake floor because they were that top heavy.

I asked this question in 2017 to my school teacher, he made fun of it and the entire class laughed at me.

But today, I got this video and got the real answer to it. Thank you so much ❤

Wow, not only answered my question on bugs dying on their backs, but surprisingly gave an encore and explained the curled up legs of dead spiders

this sounds like something a serial bug murderer would wonder about

I don’t know anything about spiders, I don’t know if they have the instinct to play dead, but I once gently pushed a spider with my finger so it would crawl away so that I don’t crush it while working in the garden. Poor spider curled up like that and looked like it had a heart attack. It stood up and crawled away after a while.

So wait spiders legs have erections while they're alive

So im an engineer by trade (lifts/elevators) and that includes of course hydraulic lifts. That hydraulic spider is fuppin awesome. Incredible control of pressure, wonder if they have an emergency release valve... Does the blood change viscosity in variable temperatures? So many questions.

I once found a dead fly just kind of standing there like it was still alive

I've tried flipping both a rhino and giraffe. Both seemed about equally easy to flip to me.

As an aside, walking with most of your limbs crippled and several internal organs severely damaged is actually easier than flipping either a rhino or a giraffe.
