It’s funny, as simple as it is, I never realized it was a “flipped ballad” in that the verse is heavy and the chorus is melodic.

Lars is so underrated as a song writer it is insane.
I mean having the ear for Unforgiven is brilliant but anyone who hasn't listened to the original Enter Sandman riff please just listen as if it wasn't for Lars there history could of been very different.

I always wondered why unforgiven didn't follow the usual trend of having a more muted verse and heavier chorus, but always thought it was a cool change. Now I realize that this unique arrangement came from Lars and I applaud him for it 👍

The Unforgiven is an incredible song. Not sure if this is before they decided Kirks riff should be the verse riff, sounds like they decided it should be heavy before they know which riff it should be. Very interesting, and Kirks riff works perfectly. Its also a pretty weird riff for Metallica, which also gave James the melody for the verses.
