Learning bird songs is a great way to gain a better understanding of the species around you, but it's not just during the day time that it can be useful. Many different bird species are most active and vocal at night. In this video we go over calls from five of the most common nocturnal bird species of eastern North America that you should know.

Another awesome video. I experienced hearing 2 Barred owl fledglings on the 4th of July in my backyard…which is 13 acres of woods. I was unsure of the call as it is unquestionably unique. It definitely made my 4th. They have hung around the last 4 nights.

Barred Owl is my favorite. Beautiful sound at night in the woods behind my property.

That tweeting in the background on all these sounds is what I want to know about.

Great Horned Owls are easily seen and heard in the Desert Southwest as vegetation is sparse and they regularly clamber over the rooftops of houses. There is one that perches on my chimney, and if I move slowly, I can stand and watch him when the moonlight is bright. Once when camping back East in West Virginia by a lake, we heard Barred Owls' calling all night long as they flew overhead.

👍 Thanks for posting! I have an area on my birding routes where I go in the evenings to listen for nocturnal species. Two you didn't mention are Common and Lesser Nighthawks.

None of these are what I'm hearing, but they all have nice peaceful sleepy vibes.

We live in Cental Texas and have a Great Horned Owl that stays near our house. He can be easily seen hunting bugs under our security light. It is great to watch him hunting at night.

Most of my barred owls photos have been photographed between 11AM to 4PM. Their call help me find them last time in the early afternoon on July 3. BTW: When I try to tell them who cooks for me (most of time it is me), they tell me that they don't a give hoot.

I'm looking for a species seen (flying in circles) and heard close too two hours after sunset. On the edge of a small town farming community, Combine harvest work was happening very close by. Pleasureville Ky! Corncrake? Maybe Bobwhite

We have a barred owl in our neighborhood. It almost sounds like someone faking an owl call!
