NASA has been big on Linux for a long time. When I used to work in the industry we sent out tons of workstations and clusters all pre-loaded with Red Hat and a boxed copy enclosed with every computer. This was to both Johnson and Goddard Spaceflight centers. I'm dating myself a bit, that was back when you could buy a Red Hat boxed copy for about $30.

In fact, I remember hearing Bruce Perens describing how he patched serial console output into the kernel and after that they had LInux machines on the space shuttle, back when we used to have those
