I have switched to 165 degree thermostat as it gives you a little time to pull over when the fan clutch goes out. Cummins is known to break number six piston rings when they over heat.

I used to have same truck, color and all. I used it to tow trailers from Phoenix to San Diego and and all the time. I would always clean my radiator with degreaser before taking on this monster 20 mile incline coming out of San Diego. There was a gas station with a water hose i stopped at every couple weeks. Those bugs fill up the fins quickly.

When mine ran hot it was because the crank case vent w/small cut in front of engine blew oil vapor on the front of my engine so I ran a hose from where the cup attached down in between the suspension and haven't had any more problems for 220, 000 miles also I installed a nylon screen all in front of my radiator to beep bugs out.

So maybe I shouldn't worry as much about running mine toward the red for a minute earlier?
